NYAKISHENYI AFRICAN MISSION (NAM)…Update May 18, 2022 … by Rev. Cannon Turyamureeba…

STATUS REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE PROGRAM: Nyakishenyi Community Medical Center.

We are very grateful to our President Judy Willson for her continued support to the Mission. We also appreciate all our board members and donors in USA.

All the programs have continued to do well.

  1. NYAKISHENYI COMMUNITY MEDICAL CENTER:

There has been steady progress of the center. We have the following staff at the center:

  1. Registered Nurse who is the In-charge or Administrator.
  2. Registered midwife
  3. Volunteer Nurse
  4. Dental officer
  5. Laboratory Assistant
  6. Cashier
  7. Cleaner
  8. Gardener

Staff at work!

The number of patients is on average 400 per month. We have not had many death cases which we count as a blessing to our center and a result of the commitment and professionalism of our staff. Many people prefer to come to this center because of the cleanliness of the center, the treatment and care patients receive and the availability of quality drugs they receive.

We have added a new building which was supposed to host the offices of the Cashier, In-charge/Administrator and the dental equipment but management decided that these offices remain where they are and the new rooms be used as patient rooms for the inpatients. The mentioned offices and dental equipment had taken rooms for the inpatients and instead of moving these offices which would have cost the center a reasonable amount of money they have not been moved and this has cost nothing to the health facility.

The new building that is now being used as a ward for in-patients.

The main challenge at the center has been housing for staff. The number of staff has increased and we need more houses for their accommodation. Because they have night shifts, it is important that they are accommodated near the medical center. The second challenge is the high cost of living for staff and of course every salary earner in Uganda. Staff have been asking for salary enhancement but it has not been possible because the facility’s income is not yet enough to cover all the expenses. The situation has been made worse when covid-19 caused a lockdown affecting Uganda’s economy and the war between Russia and Ukraine that have caused the skyrocketing prices of all essential commodities starting with petrol and diesel which affect all other things.

We are very grateful to the organizations that contributed US$10,000 to start the construction of this building and who made a big contribution (US$10,000) towards the completion of this building.

NAM SPONSORSHIP SCHEME:

The sponsoring of the school children at Nyakisorooza Primary school has been a great blessing to the people of Nyakishenyi. We have 10 children in primary, 9 in secondary school and 3 at university. Others who completed their studies are now school teachers and others are self-employed. The scheme has helped children who would have never had an opportunity to go to university realize their dreams of attaining this level of education. Amuzah Nshabaruhanga completed his first degree in Pharmacy and is now doing a second degree.   He is the first person to get a degree in Pharmacy in our sub county. Gracious Ngabirano is now completing his first degree in Environmental Engineering and will be the first person in our sub county to get this degree. Tampson Nduhura is now in his second year at University doing a degree of Bachelor of Education Science. He will be a science teacher in secondary school and we have very few science teachers in Uganda. He too will be the first secondary school science teacher in our sub country. So Nyakishenyi community is very grateful and appreciates NAM for this great work and achievement for our children. We are very grateful to the Church of the Transfiguration for this great support for our children.

On Saturday I met the NAM sponsored children and here is the photo of some of the beneficiaries who received some supplies of soap, skin jerry, books, pens and shoe polish. Prices of these commodities have shot up very high and both children and parents were very grateful to receive these gifts. Extreme right is the new head teacher Mr. Sabiiti.

The scheme has also helped me to support the late Vasta’s 3 orphans that she was taking care of when she was still here on earth. The late Vasta was a great supporter of NAM who contributed a lot to the receiving and care of NAM volunteers who came to visit Nyakishenyi and work on our projects. I am glad to the Church of the Transfiguration who heard my request and increased their donation from US$3000 to US$5000 annually to include support for these three orphans.

THE WATER PROJECT:

I am happy to report that the water project has continued to serve our villages of Nyakisorooza, Kahara, Kamaga, Kacence, Kiniogo, Shogashoga, Murambi and Marashaniro, The project has improved the lives of the people in all these villages. Because they have access to clean water there has been a significant reduction in different diseases and especially among the children. It has also improved on the general welfare of the people especially women and children who would always walk long distances to collect water from streams to be able to wash clothes and clean their bodies and to cook food for their families.

The people of Nyakishenyi can never say thank you enough for your love and care. Nyakishenyi African mission has greatly improved the lives of the people and gives hope for a better place to live in. God bless you!
